Desktop PC Configuration: Rs 15000 – 17000

Updated: February 2016

A lot of people ask me if it’s possible to assemble a desktop PC with a budget of just Rs 15,000. The answer is yes, you certainly can.

The configuration that I am going to recommend would let you run Ubuntu, Linux, Windows 7 and even Windows 8, although I would definitely suggest that you upgrade the memory to at least 4GB to run Windows 7 or 8 smoothly.

You won’t be able to play the latest games, but if your requirement is just to run office applications and browse the internet, the configuration below should be sufficient enough to do all the basic tasks.

The online price for the PC components totals to around 17,000. If you buy the PC from a local dealer, you may be able to find all the components for a better price. Some components like mouse, keyboard, monitors and speakers are sometimes cheaper to buy online.

Update: I have got a few requests from people with tighter budgets, most requests seem to be for PC under 16,000 rupees. The only option to save some money is by opting for a Combo Motherboard. In this, the processor and graphics are integrated with the motherboard. This results in lower performance but when I tested this configuration at home, the performance was pretty good. I could easily play Full HD 1080p videos, run some low end games, work on office applications, browse the internet and do all the basic tasks.

Update September 2015: The configuration has been updated with 4GB RAM for improved performance. In ‘Configuration 1’ you could remove the DVD writer and bring the total cost of the Desktop PC under 15000. It could even touch 14000, if you find the right deal.

Out of the two, we recommend ‘Configuration 1’ as it offers better performance. ‘Configuration 2’ consumes lesser power and will be about Rs 500 cheaper.

Configuration 1: Desktop PC between 15,000 and 17,000 with dedicated processor.

  • Office computer used for billing (Tally etc), office applications, browse internet

Not recommended for:

  • DO NOT buy this configuration if you do video editing, photo editing (Photoshop) or high end gaming.

  • My current desktop configuration is
    CPU – AMD Semperon 3200+ 1.8 gHz
    MOBO: Asus M2A-MX
    RAM: 2 x 1Gb DDR2 (2 slots can take 2GB each= 4Gb)
    Monitor: Acer 18.5″ 1366 x768 max resolution.
    HDD: 2 nos.

PC is used mainly for office work. Occasionally I use CorelDraw 17 and Photoshop to create flyers, posters etc. I also use Ulead Video Studio for editing video clips but since my version does not handle hd files for editing, its pretty redundant.

I am unable to play full hd video (1920 x 1080) recorded by my Moto3G Android mobile phone.
VLC does not play full HD video. Tried all kinds of fixes without success.
Youtube videos are also lagging if speed is over 480P. They play perfectly fine thru WD Live on my LG 29″ CRT TV.
Windows Media Player and KM Player play full HD video in slow motion.
The videos copied to my portable Toshiba hard drive play perfectly thru my WD Live on my old LG 29″ CRT TV.

I have Hathway Broadband which gives 1-2MBPS speed.

Is it possible to resolved above issues by upgrading RAM and a Graphics card without buying a brand new pc? If yes, which RAMs do you recommend? Current ones are Hynix 2 x 1GB.

Is it correct that monitors automatically downsize resolution?

    Appreciate your advice.
